General "rules of thumb" for making tiles for roll-up

We prefer COE 96 (System 96 compatible). We probably can accommodate you if you don't use COE 96 glass but please contact us first.

Approximately 1/4" to 1/2" thick but it is easier for us if you keep it around 3/8 - uncased, 1/4" - cased. Casing is a gather of glass done after the roll-up. This makes the pieces really sparkle.

1/4 " = colours spread and move around a bit during the expansion of blowing but the transparents really sparkle.
1/2" = colours don't move but tend to be denser than you would think

IMHO 1/4" - 3/8" is the sweet spot unless you want special effects

Our standard roll-up kiln can handle tiles 11" high x 20" wide we find the best size is from 6" x 6" to 8" high x 10" wide.

There will be some loss of pattern at the bottom (where we close the vessel) and top (where we attach the pipe) so it is best to not have your design in the 1/2" top and bottom "sacrificial" parts of the tile.

If you wish to hide the seam you should think about the design in that area. A  design for hiding the seam will have a pattern match side to side or be a solid colour on both sides or a "busy" pattern to create visual noise. It is also best to have the colour/pattern the same throughout the thickness of the tile (face to back) in the area near the seam to be.

In general avoid clear capping the design as we like to add a clear gather as part of the process. 1/4" solid colour is good since it will help to retain saturation as the colour is thinned during the stretching (part of blowing) of the tile.

It is best if you clean the tiles of all shelf paper or kiln wash. Pay particular attention to the edges of the tile where your pattern will meet.

We would like a sketch with dimensions of the final result you wish.

When you ship your panel to us the top and bottom of the panel and which is to be the inside of the vessel must be marked

Process:

After we receive your tile(s), before any action, the tiles need to be checked to see if any grinding of edges needs to be done and then they are ramped up to rolling temperature which takes about 3 hrs.

The actual blowing takes about 1 hr. The piece is annealed overnight. We will do any necessary flat lapping of the bottom of the piece (grinding and polishing) to ensure it is stable on its base and any deviation from its intended verticality is corrected.

After this is all done you can pick up your piece or we can ship it to you.

Business:

Price: $200 CDN (approx $150 US). If you ship us two or more panels the price is $170 CDN (approx $125 US) each.

Due to our other projects it may take up to 4 weeks from when we receive your tile(s) until we ship the vessels back to you.

We charge S&H which varies on where you are and how much, if any insurance you wish.

Although we use our vesy best efforts to achieve the vessel(s) you wish from the tile(s) provided. The vagaries of glass art mean that it may crack during annealing or it may not come out quite as you visioned. You understand this and assume the risks.

If you wish us to do a roll-up for you please fillout, sign and include the form on the next page. Pachage your tile, the form and your design for the finished vessel together for shipping.

Artistic Commission Order

I __________________________________________ do hearby commission Priests Mill Project to create a vessel(s) as diagrammed, from the glass tile(s) enclosed.

The Priests Mill Project will create a vessel(s) similar to the drawing(s) attached to my glass tile(s) enclosed. I understand that although the glassblowers will use all due skill and diligence there is no guarantee that the creation will not break during the process and I acknowledge and assume this risk.

Each tile is completely free of primer or wash, tile design is in landscape orientation and the top, bottom, inside face and outside face of each tile are marked as such. Dimensioned design drawings are attached to each tile.

Pricing is per tile based on the total number of tiles in the shipment. Payment is by cheque or credit card. A packaging fee of $25USD will be charged for double boxed shipping and insurance is extra, charged at cost.

Total number of tiles in shipment
Price per tile rollups up to 8" x 10" x 3/8" or square plungers up to 6" x 6" x 3/4"
Price per plunger pickups up to 10" x 12" x 1/2" or rounds up to 11" x 11" x 5/8"
